Cons:

Technologies arrive often as a result of military or industrial development. Advances in civil engineering, manufacturing, information technology, food production, and product distribution technologies result from economic and political prioritization, which is to say, that is where the money is. Technologies developed in one sector of a society often benefit others through adaptation and extension of principles, infrastructure, and production resources. Word processing technology, for example, was developed originally not for literary or educational purposes, but for the purpose of “information exchange” in military and scientific projects. If we allow a broad definition of “word processing” to mean the general storage and display of alphanumeric characters on printout or video display, then we might even allow that the word storage and display technology proceeds from a set of scientific and military-industrial assumptions about the nature and uses of written language.

Web Design

Future of the Internet

The technology of today has made leaps and bounds since the World War II era. From the invention of the radio, the television, to the internet technology is quickly taking over the human race. Holography, electronic banking, and computer viruses are three inventions that have spawned from the invention of the internet. These three concepts have made a great impact on the modern world, but if not used correctly can cause extreme damage to the world as we know it.

Imagine a world with no human, no animals, and no plants only computerized images that speak to one another. Images that are projected from two lasers onto curved silver plates. These images have already been invented. They are called holograms. Holograms are nothing more than two superimposed images two-dimensional pictures of the same object seen from many different reference points giving the illusion of a single three-dimensional object. Holography is a fairly simple concept that if modified can become beneficial as well as detrimental. For instance, if a college student decides one day that he does not want to attend a class, given access of holographic technology, he could take pictures of himself sitting in a desk as though he is actually in attendance of the class and project a hologram from an empty desk in the class. This may be a possibility in 75 years if the technological advances continue. On the negative side, if holographic science were to get in the wrong hands, it could be used a distraction in war battles. Although holography is a fascinating concept, it is still just a concept and in its early stages.

Another advance in technology that stemmed from the invention of the internet is the implementation of electronic banking. One can sit in the comfort of his or her own home and pay bills, deposit money, and buy clothes all online. If this technology continues to thrive and progress, in 75 years all physical banks will be obsolete. There would be no reason to get in a car and drive down the road to write a check or deposit cash. This is not necessarily a bad idea if done in a failsafe way. However, if the internet were to fail or become under attack from viruses this concept would fail as well.

A computer virus is a piece of software that attaches itself to a computer program and inflicts damage to the use of the computer and its programs. If viruses continue to evolve as they have since the invention of the computer, they could grow to irrevocable damages. If a virus program were to get into the wrong hands, it could be used as a weapon against countries, continents, and even the world. For instance, the Chinese government has already been reported to have begun planning to attack foreign networks through viruses. The Department of Defense noted that “China is making a significant push out of the traditional warfare areas—land, air, and sea—to a more ‘modern battlefield’ of space and cyberspace.”

Although the invention of the internet has had a positive impact on the world, the progression of certain concepts within the internet as a whole has the possibility to send us back to the Stone Age.

what is a hologram
